Peroneal nerve syndrome

Causes

  • Compression injury at the level of the fibular head.
  • May occur in sleep or anesthesia in lateral decubitus position.
  • Underweight patients are more commonly affected.

Symptoms & signs

Common peroneal nerve involvement:

  • Weakness of foot and toe dorsiflexion and foot eversion.
  • Sensory deficit in dorsum of the foot and toes and lateral aspect of lower leg.

Isolated Deep peroneal nerve involvement:

  • Weakness of foot and toe dorsiflexion.
  • Sensory deficit in the first dorsal web space of foot.

Isolated Superficial peroneal nerve involvement:

  • Weakness of foot eversion.
  • Sensory deficit in the lateral aspect of the leg and dorsum of the foot and toes, except in the first dorsal web space.
