Dorsal scapular nerve lesions

Causes

• Entrapment within scalenus medius muscle. Rare as isolated neuropathy but has been reported in body-builders.

Symptoms & signs

• Lateral displacement of scapula. Scapular inferior angle is rotated outwards.
• Rhomboid weakness and atrophy.

Examination

• Patient stands with their hand on the hip. Test rhomboid strength by having patient press their elbow backward against resistance.
• Alternatively, have the patient push with their palm backward with their hand behind their back.
